Watching a few episodes of this hit series could lead you to believe that every house has shiplap hidden underneath all that boring drywall. In reality, shiplap construction is more popular in certain areas of the country than others. Loosely defined, shiplap is boards fitted together so each overlaps the one below it. Each panel has a little groove so the pieces click together closely. It gets its name from early shipbuilding methods, which employed this technique to create a watertight surface.
The plywood thickness is up to you based on your preference and project needs. I love adding shiplap to rooms as an easy way to incorporate texture and interest and elevate the space. It gives it just enough detailing to feel special without looking too busy. If you buy your plywood from Lowe’sthey will actually cut the strips for you in the store, saving you a ton of time and work. The 1/8th inch reveal is commonly referred to as the nickel gap. The term references nickels placed between the boards to get the particular size reveal. These Shiplap boards can be installed to show differing “reveal” gaps.

One of Home Depot's best-selling shiplap boards is a nickel gap model made from radiata pine. Available for just under $18, depending on your region, these boards are 12 feet long, 5 1/4 inches wide, and 9/16 inches in depth. Covering around 5.28 square feet of space, the material contains finger joints for the boards to fit snug together.
