Personally, I prefer Home Depot or Lowes because they will cut plywood down into shiplap planks for you at no charge! This is great if you don’t have a table saw or if you want to save time. Just remember to measure ahead of time what size boards you need. We planked the walls with 8″ wide boards and installed black roofing paper behind the boards to give us the dark reveal. We used the nickel gap installation method and painted the boards, with 2 coats, after installation. You can read about the renovation and see before pictures.
They had plain ol’ pine boards and tongue and groove boards also – but that was not the look I was going for. They would certainly work for some projects, but personally I don’t care for the v-groove look and was after the REAL DEAL. One of Lowe's most popular shiplap boards is a classic white pine model. Costing just less than $18 per board, depending on location, this material is also primed and ready to be painted should you choose to. Sitting at 12 feet in length and 5.25 inches in width, these boards each cover up to 5.35 square feet of space. The edges of the boards are self-spacing to allow for an easier installation process.

These 8 ft boards can be found at your local hardware store like Home Depotfor roughly $7 each. One side is flat and the other side has a pattern, making them reversible. They can be stained or painted, typically these boards are raw wood and not primed.

Starting at the bottom, we measured the length for the first plank. Leveling the very first plank is key so that all the other planks are level. You may want a helper to help you hold the level and the plank to ensure it’s perfect before nailing it down.
Steps to Get Started
We have solid wood shiplap – we DO NOT use MDF or fabricated shiplap. We have widths that are not available at the big box stores or your local hardware store. Although each of these products contains similar features, we have to say to play it safe and go with Home Depot.
It should also be noted that these boards are reversible, which means you can decide on two different looks. While you can use this material indoors, they aren't intended for exterior use. Based on over 700 reviews, this product received a 4.6-star rating and a 91% recommendation rate.
Find local professional contractors to help with your project. We tried to use the longer boards so we wouldn’t have too many vertical seams. But if you use shorter lengths, then I would definitely recommend staggering your pieces. A plain piece of pine run through your table saw with dado blade would be ideal. Depending on which you choose it’s a little less there. Although it looks like the equivalent of what you ordered is about $9 per board also.

We purchased these boards at a local WindsorONE distributor and used a nickel gap reveal. Lastly, the boards we chose for our powder room project are primed traditional planks.
